Why specialist underwriters need the freedom to underwrite
Every experienced underwriter reaches a point in their leadership career where they ask themselves whether they are spending enough time underwriting. Increasingly, that can be a difficult question to answer positively.
Since I started in the industry 25 years ago, the London Market has become steadily more complex. Governance has increased, processes have multiplied and operational requirements have grown. Much of that change has been necessary, but it has also created an environment where too much time is spent navigating systems and operational bottlenecks, and too little time is spent doing what underwriters are employed to do: making informed decisions on risk. That's one of the reasons I joined Crux.
Having spent my career building Liability portfolios within established Lloyd's businesses, I wanted the opportunity to help build something different. Here, we're combining the underwriting discipline and expertise of a leading carrier with the agility, technology and entrepreneurial mindset of a modern MGA.
Building a business, not just a book
Launching our Liability proposition gave us the opportunity to create the kind of underwriting business experienced specialists genuinely want to be part of: one with the freedom to make decisions, embrace innovation and think for the long term.
That means shaping underwriting strategy, building trusted broker and coverholder relationships, and developing sustainable portfolios, without unnecessary operational friction. It also means having capacity partners who share our long-term vision.
We're not trying to reinvent underwriting. The foundations of our market - expertise, judgement and relationships - remain as important as ever. The difference is using technology to remove the friction that prevents underwriters from exercising that judgement and using that technology to underpin better processes, with a focus on better customer and underwriter outcomes.
Technology with a purpose
Technology has become something of a buzzword across insurance, but we’ve taken a deliberately practical approach.
Rather than building technology for its own sake, we’re asking a simple question: how can we make underwriting and delegated authority processes work better for everyone involved? We don’t believe technology should replace underwriting. We believe it should remove everything that gets in its way.
For underwriters, that means cleaner data and connected workflows that provide a complete view of every risk and portfolio. Instead of piecing together information from multiple systems and spreadsheets, our underwriters have a single connected view of risk, helping them make faster, better-informed decisions.
Better systems don’t make better underwriters. They give good underwriters more time to do what they’re best at. Chris Jones, CEO Liability
Our underwriting platform connects submission intake, underwriting, pricing, binding, documentation, claims and portfolio oversight within one AI-assisted operating environment, creating a connected view of risk from submission through to portfolio performance.
We then extend that same connected platform to our distribution partners. CruxHub, now live for brokers, brings them into that environment, while CruxBench will do the same for coverholders in the future. This creates a seamless flow of information between Crux and the people we trade with, making it faster and simpler to do business.
Ultimately, every hour saved on administration is another hour spent assessing risk or working with our strategic partners. Better systems don’t make better underwriters. They give good underwriters more time to do what they’re best at.
Thinking beyond the next renewal
Finally, the clinching factor that attracted me to Crux was its long-term outlook.
Whether it's our employee ownership model, our investment in technology or our ambition to continue expanding our specialty underwriting capabilities, everything is designed around sustainable growth rather than short-term milestones.
That creates confidence throughout the trading chain. Brokers, coverholders, capacity partners and our own people all benefit from knowing we're building a business for the long term.
A market where underwriting matters
The Liability market is becoming more competitive. After several years of rate increases, pricing has rapidly changed course, making disciplined underwriting more important than ever. Market conditions like these reward technical expertise, strong broker relationships and sound judgement. In other words, they reward good underwriting.
Markets will harden and soften. Technology will continue to evolve. Good underwriting will always matter. Our job at Crux is simple: give specialist underwriters the freedom to do more of it and the tools to do it better.
