Purpose Built: Why We Created Crux for the Long Term
By Graham Elliott, CEO & Co-Founder, and Mike O'Connor, Chief Underwriting Officer & Co-Founder
Every MGA has a business model. Ours starts with alignment. From day one, we chose to build Crux as an independently owned business where every employee is a shareholder. It's a structure that reflects how we think great specialty underwriting businesses should be built: by people who have a genuine stake in the outcome and are committed to creating long-term value for clients, brokers, carrier partners and each other.
That means we're not building Crux around a five-year exit plan. We're building it for the long term. As our people grow with the business, so does their ownership. It's a model that rewards loyalty, encourages collaboration and aligns everyone behind the same objective: disciplined underwriting, sustainable growth and doing the right thing for our trading partners.
Everything else we've built flows from that philosophy. The London market has always been defined by expertise. Whether underwriting Political Violence & Terrorism or complex Liability risks, success still depends on experience, judgement and trusted relationships. Those fundamentals won't change.
What is changing at a rapid pace is the way we support them. We founded Crux because we believed there was an opportunity to combine exceptional underwriting with purpose-built technology to make delegated authority simpler, faster and more transparent for brokers and carriers alike.
Shared Ownership. Shared Success.
That remains our purpose today. Crux is built around shared employee ownership because we believe businesses perform best when everyone is working towards the same goal.
Everyone in the business is a shareholder. As people build their careers with us, their stake in the business grows, rewarding loyalty and long-term commitment. It's a structure that creates genuine alignment between individual success and the success of the business.
That has a real impact on behaviour and decision-making. It encourages disciplined underwriting, collaboration and a shared focus on building lasting value for our brokers, carrier partners and colleagues.
It's a shared journey, and we want everyone to share in its success.
Underwriting first. Technology alongside it.
There is no substitute for underwriting experience, particularly in specialist classes such as Political Violence & Terrorism and Liability, and complex catastrophe-exposed Property classes, where every risk presents its own unique profile.
Technology can process information faster than people ever could. It can structure data, automate repetitive tasks and improve workflows. What it cannot do is replace underwriting judgement.
Our technology is being built to help operationalise disciplined underwriting, giving our teams and partners a cleaner, faster and more connected way to transact. The first practical applications will launch soon, with CruxHub creating one connected view of every risk, no matter how the submission arrives. Clean data means better decisions, less duplication and greater transparency across the trading chain.
Building momentum
Since launching, we've continued to strengthen our underwriting capabilities, attract outstanding people and invest heavily in the technology that will underpin the next phase of our growth.
Key milestones so far include:
- Launch of Crux Underwriting
- Appointment of our first underwriting and technology team
- Expansion into Political Violence & Terrorism and Liability
- Key strategic hires
- CruxHub development milestone / upcoming launch - watch this space
- Watch this space - next class launches
We are creating a uniquely aligned model where great people, disciplined underwriting, modern technology and strong partnerships all work together to create something far more valuable than any could achieve alone.
Looking ahead
Insurance is entering one of the most significant periods of change in decades. Better data, digital trading and Agentic AI will reshape how risks are distributed and traded across the delegated authority market.
We're excited by that future.
Our ambition is to build Crux into a leading multi-line specialty MGA, continuing to invest in underwriting talent, technology and new product lines. In time, we also aspire to establish our own capital vehicle, sitting alongside our capacity partners and demonstrating the ultimate alignment of interests - genuine skin in the game.
The foundations are in place. The technology - CruxHub - is being tested as I write. The opportunities are significant.
Purpose built. Underwriting led. Technology enabled.
Alignment has defined our journey so far, and it will continue to define where we go next. The best is yet to come.

Graham Elliott
Graham has spent most of his career in the financial services industry, working in investment banking, and insurance. His experience includes time as Managing Director of Aqua Underwriting and as CEO of Oxygen Insurance Brokers.
In 2016 Graham co-founded Azur Group (as its CEO), a digital-first MGA that put customer experience at its heart. Azur quickly established itself as a leading High Net Worth MGA and created a technology arm, Azur Technology. In 2022, Azur Group split in half, with the technology part establishing itself as a standalone company – Azur Technology. Graham now also serves as non-Exec Chairman of Azur Technology.
When not shouting at politicians on the radio, Graham can be heard torturing the English Hymnal on the organ in Church.

Mike O’Connor
Mike is a Lloyd’s/London Market Insurance professional in both broking and underwriting with 28 years’ experience. From 2009–2022, Mike was the Executive Underwriter for Political Violence and Political Risk at Ascot Underwriting. His role was significantly expanded to cover a multitude of other areas including Leadership and Management, Underwriting, Strategic Broker Distribution, Underwriting Operations & Modernisation including work streams like Brexit and Future at Lloyd’s.
Mike is the youngest co-founder of Crux despite looking the oldest; he puts this down to the struggles he has faced having been a lifetime Watford FC fan.
